TEAM SUZUKI RACING news 01 2017 MX Special Edition Contributors: Ray Archer, David Bulmer, Team Suzuki Press Office. Design: Callum Tomsett. S uzuki entered the FIM World Motocross championships in the late 1960s, winning the first of its 30 individual and 32 manufacturer world titles in 1970. More titles followed for Suzuki across all classes, from the RM two-stroke period through to the modern four-stroke era and the RM-Z450WS. In the 1980s the Suzuki factory took a rest from competing directly in the FIM world championships, with Suzuki importer and private teams taking up the challenge on the yellow RM machines and adding further individual and manufacturer titles. The Suzuki factory returned to compete in the World MX Championship under the management of former Team Suzuki Grand Prix rider Sylvain Geboers in 1988 and Sylvain established the Suzuki factory team management company as Geboers Racing Promotion, (GRP), in 1992. Under Sylvain’s management, Suzuki achieved ten manufacturer titles, three in the MX125 class and seven in the MX250/MX1 class. One of those individual championship titles was won by Stefan Everts, who went on to become the most successful rider in the history of motocross, winning a total of ten individual world titles. After Stefan finished his racing career, he moved into management and took over the GRP team from Sylvain Geboers in 2016. Suzuki and its subsidiaries quickly built a strong relationship with the new GRP management and enjoyed a close cooperation with Stefan and his team, not only in the motocross racing arena, but also in promoting Suzuki’s Adventure Sport range of production motorcycles. The Suzuki RM-Z range continues to win races and championships at all levels of the sport and now, looking forward to 2018, the spotlight will fall on Suzuki’s continuing participation in the AMA Supercross and Motocross series in the USA, as well as numerous national and local championships around the world.
